Letters and Sounds activities

Image
In our classroom we are trying to spark our knowledge of Letters and Sounds by using a range of activities to participate in that excite us to remember the letters we know and the sounds that they make.  We enjoy the rotations that we do that help us to form letters correctly and remember the sound that each letter makes.  1. Forming the letters on whiteboards 2. Using beans to write the letter we're focusing on  3. Writing letters using chalk  4. Using magnets to write the sound card 5. Drawing letters on a big piece of paper using a range of colours Each task that we're at takes 8 minutes to complete; this is run by a timer that indicates when we need to move to the next activity.  The expectation is to clean our area ready for the next groups to begin.

PRIDE CUP WINNERS

If you're a little rusty or need a reminder of what PRIDE stands for  P - Participation  R - Respect I - Integrity  D - Determination  E - Empathy

STEM: Sand Structures

Image
Welcome back to Miss Ngatuakana who has been away for a loooooong time! Today we started with a STEM activity where we had to create a structure using sand that we would want to live in.  There was limited use of tools and the sandpit had to fit everybody in which meant we had very little room to build. The sand was a bit wet on the top but also very dry underneath. This was going to be a challenge.  We made an observation that the wet sand was easier to build with than dry sand so we filled up cups with water to help the sand we were using become easier to mould.  Some of us were able to build one sand house and then decorated it with the bark that we found in the sand where as others built multiple houses with no decorations rationalising it was one for everyday? Definitely big thinkers in Aroha 3.  Here's a look at our methods and end products.

Samoan Language Week, Matariki

Image
Happy Samoan Language Week aiga! Unfortunately Miss Ngatuakana was injured for a month from school but here are some of the things we participated in.  We dressed up in traditional samoan attire to celebrate the Samoan culture. We also made a tapa using samoan patterns that you can come and look at. We made a Korowai for Matariki which reminds us of how some of our ancestors used the moon as a reminder to track the days of the year as well as the seasons that were perfect for planting kai for their whanau.

Lock down proceedures

Image
In the event of a lock down meaning someone is in the school that shouldn't be we have a procedure that happens to ensure that everyone is safe.  We need to get out of sight and make sure all the doors are locked. We also need to remain and stay quiet until we have heard from Mrs Mulipola that it is safe to come out. We then as a school need to move promptly to the front of the school with our emergency buckets to take the roll and let the office know that everyone is safe and counted for.  During these times it can be a bit scary but we know that with the practices that we have we will be more prepared if a situation like this was ever to happen at Rowandale School.

Look who flew into our class

Image
Why did the chicken cross the road? To run away from Mr Savage!  We were minding our own business as we do and what flew into the class? Mr Savage with a winged and feathered friend.  Of course when a chicken comes into the class everything stops and all attention and questions were aimed at Mr Savage.  We learnt that we need to look after the chickens by reporting when it has escaped the cage and to also stop banging on their gate because this scares them. When we can do this we will be using the PRIDE value Empathy because we are caring about the feelings of our heihei in our kura.

Dog Safety

Image
We had the privilege of meeting Kiera who is a dog and her owner. We learnt about how we can be safe around dogs and what we need to do before we approach a dog to touch or in a situation where a dog is chasing us how we can keep ourselves safe.  This is Kiera, we learnt that she loves to play and enjoys being active in parks. Most of the time when she is with her owner she is on a leash. If we wanted to pat Kiera we have to ask her owner first and not go up and touch her because this can be stressful for her.  We learnt to stand like a tree if we dont want a dog to chase us.  HOW TO STAND LIKE A TREE Before we could pat Kiera we had to ask her owner for permission. Here are some photos of us patting Kiera.
